BURIAL OF THE DEAD 149

To understand this funeral rite you may only remember some words by Christ: "You are all Gods" (Joh 10.34)"I and the Father are one" (John 10, 30) "When you know your Selves then you will be known and you will be aware that you are the sons of the Living Father" (The Gospel of Thomas 3.9) Christ did then preach such old "Monism", that our innermost Self is identical with the eternal God and before time and space, that our temporary incarnations can be named e. g. "Sons" of the "Father" or of the "Spirit" which he names our heavenly "Mother" (The Gospel according to the Hebrews) and that we because of our inmost identity with the Eternal do return to the eternal origin after having perfected this pilgrimage. Compare the Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians 1,4. about our pre-existence and predestinated happiness. With this background will all our incarnations and death look as new steps with new chances on a path to more and more manifested divinity.

A fire burning above the coffin may symbolise the eternal Self which survives the death of all bodies.

(( There are many other funeral rites which are dualistic in the sense believing that we, and God are TWO and can never be ONE, that even our innermost Self, is created , not immortal, that a God outside us will make only some created souls happy in a created heaven. Be free to compare different funerals.)

THE CHARGE

P (turns to the people and says:) Brethren and sisters

We are met together here to-day to celebrate the passing into a higher life of our dear brother (sister) N N It is but natural that we who have known and love him /her/ should regret his (her) departure from amongst us, yet on this occasion it is our duty to think not of ourselves, but of him (her). Therefore must we endeavour to lay aside the thought of our personal loss and dwell only upon his (her) great and most glorious gain. To this end I will call upon You to join with me in the recitation ( or singing) of the Te Deum

( or part of the Twenty-third psalm)

THE COMMITTAL

P Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God of immense love to take back to our heavenly Home our dear brother (sister) hence departed, we therefore commit this his (her) cast-off body to be consumed by fire ( or to the ground) (or to the sea)

EARTH TO EARTH, ASHES TO ASHES, DUST TO DUST

(earth, or ash is thrown on the coffin)

that in the more glorious spiritual body which now you shall wear you may be free from earthly limitations to serve the divine Self as we ought

For I say unto you: Blessed are the dead in the Lord; for they are in the hands of God

In the sight of the unwise they seem to die, and their departure is taken for misery, and their

going from us to be utter destruction; but they reach peace.

For the divine Self is immortal and it is only its bodies which die

and are renewed until perfection.

Our eternal brings forth our heavenly nature as a heavenly child

which creates our human nature as an image of its own divinity until we

are called back from our roles here to our heavenly home, to the uncreated eternity

P THE GOD which is our innermost sitteth above the water-flood.

The GOD remaineth our King and Queen with human similes.

The universe is our divine temple; wisdom, strength and beauty are about the throne as pillars of the work. For God is infinite wisdom, omnipotent strength and the divine beauty

shines through the whole universe in order an symmetry

The heavens are stretched forth as a canopy. The earth is a divine footstool.

God crowns the universal temple with stars as with a diadem.

From Godīs hand flows all power and glory

Sun and moon are messenger of Godīs will and all Godīs law is concord.

When we ascend up into heavens God is there.

If we go down to help into some hell God is there also

If we take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea

even there also God shall lead us . In the mighty care of God do we rest in perfect peace In the care of God rests this our loved one,

whom God has designed to draw nearer to the vision of eternal beauty

Ever praising God therefore in firm but humble confidence we invoke and say

O Thou light in our innermost in whom is no darkness

We will open our human hearts for calm and peace

And open in us the eyes of the soul that we may see by faith the radiance and the glory

That Thou art pouring upon us Thy children.

For thou ever givest us far more tan we can ask or think,

and it is only through our feebleness and faithlessness that we ever need crave

anything from thine omnipotence.

But Thou knowest well the weakness of our human heart and

in Thy limitless love Thou will make allowance for our human love

when we invoke heavenly blessing and eternal rest unto this our dear brother (sister) and that light perpetual may shine upon him (her)

We thank Thee that in thy loving providence thou has drawn him (her) from the unreal

towards the real. from the darkness of earth into Thy glorious light, through the gates of death into a splendour beyond our comprehension. Our loving thought shall follow and surround him (her) Your angels take this our gift of thought imperfect though it be and touch it with the heavenly fire of thy love so that it may become for him (her) a guardian angel to help him (her) on the upwards way. Thus through Thy lovingkindness may we in deep humility and reverence become fellow.-workers with thy boundless power and may our weakness be supported by Thine infinite strength that we with this our dearly-beloved brother (sister) may in due time attain unto the wisdom of the Spirit who with the Father and the Son liveth and reigneth, God , throughout all ages of ages

C. Amen

P + The souls of all the departed shall rest in peace through the Love of God

C Amen

P + The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Love of God

and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost shall be with us all evermore

C; Amen
